Rugged, accurate, reliable and with a large magazine capacity, the Glock pistol became a huge success. As the company turned its interest towards commercial shooters, it embraced larger-bore guns with a loyal following, producing firearms such as the subcompact 10mm Glock 29 and the .45 ACP Glock 30.
The history of Glock began in the early 1980s, when knife and bayonet manufacturer Gaston Glock faced competition to buy new pistols for the Austrian military. With no pistol design experience, Glock plunged into developing pistols for contract. After much research and development, he developed the Glock 17. The gun was made of polymer and steel, creating a lightweight pistol with an emphasis on reliability. Designated (a pistol's ability to act as a natural extension of a shooter's hand-eye coordination) and incredibly accurate, he won an Army contract and went on to literally conquer the world.
The Glock design proved scalable in physical size and caliber. The full-sized original Glock 17 gave birth to the smaller, more compact Glock 19 and then the subcompact Glock 26. In the late 1990s, after marketing the full-size 10mm and 0.45 Glock ACP, the company decided to skip compact-sized frames and move straight to sub-compacts. The result was the Glock 29 in 10mm auto and the Glock 30 in .45 ACP. Although dimensionally similar, the two pistols serve different purposes and fulfill different roles.
The 10mm Auto Glock 29 is designed for the home defense enthusiast, casual gun enthusiast and hunter. The 10mm Automatic Round, designed by firearms authority Jeff Cooper, is designed as a lighter and faster alternative to the .45 ACP. A 180-grain full-alloy jacketed 10mm automatic cartridge will reach 1,050 ft per second—speed still subsonic but much faster than 0.45 ACP. The lighter 10mm automatic loop will comfortably travel up to 1500 feet per second in supersonic range. By comparison, a 230-grain full-metal-jacketed .45 ACP round would reach speeds of only 890 feet per second. The 10mm automatic round also generates more energy in the muzzle and is more compact.
The Glock 29 and Glock 30 are very similar in appearance. Both pistols have an overall length of 6.88 inches with a barrel length of 3.77 inches. The Glock 29 weighs 26.83 ounces and the Glock 30 weighs just over half an ounce. Both pistols measure between 1.27 inches wide and 4.45 inches (Glock 29) and 4.80 inches (Glock 30) high.
The trigger pull and trigger travel are identical not only to each other but to all Glocks, with a standard 5.5 pound trigger pull and 0.49 inches of trigger travel. This consistency makes it easy to transition from one type of Glock to another — a plus for shooters and a boon for Glock marketing. Both the Glock 29 and Glock 30 carried a ten-round, two-stack magazine—the first pistols to pack multiple rounds into a large-caliber subcompact frame at the time of their introduction. Like the other subcompact Glocks, the 10mm automatic and .45 ACP versions will receive the same magazine as their full-size versions, holding fifteen rounds for the Glock 29 and thirteen rounds for the Glock 30.
